“It’s important to note that the great masters would often say that practicing yoga asana without meditation is like taking an hour to prepare a delicious healthy meal and then as you’re about to sit down and eat it, get up and walk away.” – Jonni Pollard, 1 Giant Mind
I’ve prepared thousands of “delicious meals” however I never ate the majority of them, until 10 days ago when I started a bi-daily meditation practice.
Previously I had dabbled in meditation but why hadn’t I been meditating regularly? When I asked myself the question I realised that I had never learnt or understood the benefits of meditation. It hadn’t been spoken of at my teacher training which was focused purely on the asanas and it is only now I am learning how much there is beyond the asanas.
Even in this short amount of time, I can feel the power of meditation and I know I am a better yoga teacher than just 10 days ago. My thoughts are developing a beautiful clarity and I can hear the clarity in my voice when I am teaching, which wasn’t there before – everything is become more effortless.
Meditation allows our nervous system to relax, releasing all which doesn’t serve us. As yoga teachers we should commit to a daily meditation practice, to give back to ourselves, so we can continue to give, inspire, shine.
I feel truly blessed to be on this endless journey of discovery, may no yoga teacher ever be hungry again.
