WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR WORK?
Helping students & teachers understand the why & how of the practice by overlaying it with an understating of anatomy & physiology. I love watching the light go on in their heads as they make sense of it and how to apply the practice in a meaningful way to the individual. I also really love seeing this growth of yoga being used in the medical world, there’s such a need for it!
As far as actual teaching goes, I really just love helping people. As a Chinese Medicine practitioner as well it has always been the part I love most, helping people understand their body and how to take care of it and watching them change as they begin to feel better. I love that!!
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
All the details in between… emails, lawyers, accountants, making new manuals, finding new programs to help our teachers learn the material better…I love the early creation phases and seeing the results but I don’t love all the details in between and sitting at my computer all day for days on end.
As far as teaching goes, I’m really not interested in anything fancy anymore. I love teaching with a clear purpose so my students know why they should be doing that, whether is a back care class or inversion class. Why does it matter if I can do a handstand if I don’t feel any better afterwards and I’m still an asshole when I leave my mat? Otherwise I personally leave class feeling like why did I do that, what’s the point. Neurologically our bodies can integrate information much better if we are able to convey a clear purpose behind it and our bodies can integrate the effects more easily as well.
WHAT STILL EXCITES YOU AND KEEPS YOU ENGAGED?
The amazing capacity of the body & mind. Watching others learn & grow, feel better and become inspired to help others. I’m such a nerd at heart so I love reading and studying and dissecting cadavers and meditating and just observing it all.
WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT LEARNING NEXT?
We just started a research foundation funded by Yoga Medicine and I’m over the moon with excitement to watch it grow and expand and see some great takeaways from it. It’s probably what I’m most excited about right now!
WHAT’S YOUR FINEST ADVICE FOR A NEWER TEACHER?
Know that you have so much to share, even the newest teachers! And remember that your job is to help people, to be of service to your community, with that in mind you can’t fail. It doesn’t matter how many people are in your class or whether they like you or if you can please everyone, what you wear, the music you play or don’t play, etc. There will always be people who know more than you & people who know less than you about what you are teaching, teach it anyway. Your job is simply to be of service to your students and to help guide them along their own investigation into themselves. Enjoy the journey. 🙂
EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY OR GOD(S)?
If I had the answer to that we probably wouIf I had the answer to that we probably wouldn’t be talking right now. lol. But I feel pretty confident it’s some combination of both. You can’t deny there is something bigger than our human form out there, but biology well there’s a ton of interesting info out there and I’m a science nerd.
