One of the most powerful human needs is the one for connection. We all want a sense of belonging, a feeling of community and hope that the people in our lives both encourage and support us at all times. We long for connection, so that we might feel more complete in our individual lives. Connection offers us a feeling of purpose.
As teachers, we have the opportunity to hold space for these feelings of connection to form. The truth of it is that there is a deep interconnectedness that brings all living beings together in the world— or even, to a studio practice. To offer this more fully, we must make space and create an open environment. This environment is one that is non-judgmental and free of any barriers that promote separateness. The spaces in which we teach should connect our practitioners to each other, life and all of its opportunities.
It is in this designed space that despite individual beliefs, reactions or experiences, people can gather through the practice of yoga to locate that sense of belonging. Within these spaces, people can perceive themselves as more connected with their surroundings, therefore bettering the lives of not only themselves, but of others. We have the ability to offer this space to others, so that individuals might realize that this sense of relation is available within and in all places, always.
Realizing the importance of connection can help us to co-create the life we want or the environment we desire by being open to the life we already have and the opportunities to create community where ever we are.
As teachers, we are an integral part of the whole, an important part of an incredibly grand design with an amazing platform and opportunity to share love, experience connection and forever shift and better the lives of both ourselves and others.
Open, abandon separation, embrace connection and create community.
