Teaching kids yoga is such fun and a sweet challenge for yoga teachers. Here are my top 5 best practices and hints for your work with children.
*Keep in mind they’re only kids; who mostly love to have fun – put aside expectations and go with the flow. As you lean into your inner kid self, lesson plan ideas get easier. I like to play a game called ‘Freeze and Flow’ or ‘Shake the Sillies Out’ to get the kids (and me!) warmed up before getting started.
*Keep postures simple, straightforward and repetitive. When teaching a kids’ class, point out the basics rather than giving too many instructions, fine details or adjustments. Keep it simple.
*Don’t be afraid of the kids in your yoga class; BE ONE OF THEM. This provides an opportunity for everyone to create, be expressive, and grow together. Be open to suggestions and integrate their ideas into the practice whenever possible.
*Play off of their energetic, happy vibes and encourage participation. Kids are creative and will challenge you in ways you didn’t expect. Each time you teach, you’ll gain juicy new inspiration to add into a future class.
*Know that you’re helping children feel more confident and contributing to a strong foundation for focus and awareness.
