If I close my eyes I can visualize my sacred home. It is bright, light and clean. Each item in my home was chosen because of it’s usefulness, or it’s specialness. There is space for my yoga practice. For my meditation. For painting, writing, making mala, sleeping, eating, loving. It is divine and it fills me with inspiration.
When I open my eyes, I am sharing a small three bedroom apartment with three other (beautiful) people. My corner of the apartment is literally that, a corner with my bed, my altar, and everything I own. Organized as best it can be (most of the time). I love my home; but it is not yet the sacred space of my dreams. One day I will live in that space. In the meantime, finding the sacred right here where I am has become a special practice for me.
As a yoga teacher and lover of ceremony, ritual and meditation are an ingrained part of my life. There was a time that I felt I couldn’t find sacred space within my small piece of the world; yet, learning to do just that has brought me more inner power and peace than I have ever known.
Here is how I set the stage for Divinity within my very normal bedroom:
- Everything is swept and dusted. This happens before every practice and every sit. It only takes a few minutes and creates clarity.
- I reorganize my altar and light candles. Perhaps I add incense, too. I set the mood for myself to be soft and open.
- Smudging. Especially if I am sitting for meditation or performing ritual, I use sage to energetically clear the space. It really works and the shift is tangible.
- Draw Cards. Tarot, the Art of Attention Healing Deck, Angel Cards, Goddess Cards… I look to one or all for sources of inspiration and guidance.
This practice of calling the sacred into my space and my heart has served me well. I offer it here in the hopes that you will find your own path in creating space for yourself. Right now, on this step of your journey. Namaste.
