Julie Wilkins
Julie began her yoga practice in 2004, fifteen years after having extensive spine-fusion surgery for scoliosis. Through diligent study and amazing teachers along the way, Julie found freedom of movement and incredible strength in a way that she never thought would be possible after scoliosis surgery. Julie’s mission is to inspire others to find mobility and freedom in their body, mind, and heart through the practice of yoga. She has been teaching public and private classes since January of 2009 and is now the co-owner/director of Kula Yoga Community. Kula Yoga Community provides yoga classes, workshops, and teacher trainings in Mobile and on the Eastern Shore of Alabama. Julie will be leading a 200 hour teacher training program and immersion September 2015 in Mobile Alabama. Julie is an Occupational Therapist with experience in a variety of rehabilitation settings helping people of all ages learn valuable skills to regain functional independence in their daily lives. In 2005, she trained with Ellen Kiley, founder of Scoliyoga, to learn a modified, breath centered yoga practice specifically for individuals with scoliosis and spinal fusions. This inspired her to move forward with grace and courage in following her own unique yogic path. She then took her modified yoga practice and continued training locally with Melanie Buffett, owner of Yoga Birds, Nadia Jenkins, and Nancy LaNasa’s Abhaya Yoga Center in Pensacola. More recently she has been participating in online trainings with Christina Sell as well as onsite training with Elena Brower. Julie has participated in a variety of yoga workshops both locally and nationally studying Anusara, Iyengar, Power Yoga, and therapeutic styles of yoga. Julie’s inspirational classes provide an integration of a variety of yoga styles and techniques which draw from both her personal and professional background. She is known for her gift of verbal cueing, clarity, creative sequencing, and form based instruction.
