Time Is Soil
time is my friend.
this thought unfurls my forehead,
unbuckles my belly,
and rights me
to see patterns.
Nepo says, “dark soil
that is not the root
holds the root
and feeds the flower.”
he says humans can access unseeable soil,
supportive, magical and strong.
i feel unseeable soil
when the pencil touches the page,
when i practice,
when i teach.
plants depend on soil
to hold the root
to provide nutrients:
nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
humans move freely
while held by unseeable soil,
a web of nutrients:
time, spaciousness and quiet teachers.
unseeable soil supports us
if we listen,
if we observe,
if we arrive on time.
i arrive early to teach,
i clear the space,
i do a short practice,
I review my intention.
unseeable soil
brings my teachers to stand with me.
unseeable soil
brings my smile for the student
walking in the room.
