A sacred space for me is a physical space that I have put great effort into
assembling in such a way that it holds a spiritual significance to me. My
definition of “sacred” is not a religious one, but it is spiritual and it guides my
journey towards deeper meaning in my life. A sacred space is an area where I
know I can feed my spirit, and connect to the energy of the greater universe,
whether that be through reading, meditation, crystals, candles, tarot cards or
Yoga, the space becomes sacred by my intention for it to be so. While
other spaces may have multiple functions; sleeping, cleaning, storage and
entertainment. My sacred space must be de-cluttered, and de-plugged of
technology and only hold objects that are needed for me to relax and draw my
attention inward. With the intention to clear, de-clutter and bless it myself, the
space transforms into a physical space whose sole function is feeding my
soul. My sacred space is my bedroom, it is not always sacred, and I must go
through a process of de-cluttering, cleaning and smudging before it is ready.
For me, the process of setting the space up is just as important as what goes
on in the space post cleanup. I believe that our environment often reflects our state of mind and therefore using a little Saucha (cleanliness) to clear the
space and ready it for spiritual practices is in itself a blessing. Transforming
the space from its original use to a sacred one, the space then becomes
sacred by my intention for it to be so.
